How To Play Quake 1 Like It’s 2011 (not 1999)

Seeing this recent post on RPS got me in the mood to do some singleplayer QuakeOneing. Just thinking about it gave me a shiver of anticipation, and I could hear the shotgun pow-tch-chk, the hiss and growl and roar and the clank-wobble-boom of grenades. That was it: the itch needed scratching. As soon as I got home from work, I got to re-installing.

But if you’re anything like me, you like a little modern gloss on the old warwagon. Leave the gameplay mechanics alone, but the shiny? I like the shiny!

John Carmack is, perhaps, the nearest thing to a demigod the gaming world can claim to have. Half man, half deity, touched by the hand of the eternal, wandering the earth, solving really hard math problems, Sisyphean, DOOMed forever like Leonardo (or any of the other ninja turtles) to eternally strive for a goal that can never be reached — to capture reality.

Quake Live is out of beta, and to ‘celebrate’, id software has rolled out two subscription plans to try and suck some money out of people still keen to play a 10-year old game. It’s a little bit ludicrous, I reckon. You can read on for some discussion of why I think so, beyond my usual crankiness and inveterate cheapness, and also for the details on the new subscriptions that will supplement the ‘Standard’ free version, which has been the only version until now. I might end up swearing a little bit, so there’s that to look forward to.
