After a long absence, we have returned! Work and life may interfere, but nothing will stop us from nattering inanely into your earholes about beer! And games! Always with games.

After reviewing what we’ve been doing while we’ve been away, we dive right into the news with descriptions of the new Portal 2 Puzzle Creator, Battlefield 3 sells 5 million units in the first week and simultaneously destroys my faith in humanity and sets EA up for massive disappointment when Modern Warfare 3 inevitably sells that much in a day, the most unexpected Halloween special DLC pack we’ve ever seen, Blizzard jumps the shark and steps in it, and more, in this week’s hopefully final return of the Full Glass Empty Clip Podcast. Podcast-Tangent

We’re back from vacation this week, and as a consequence, we’re a little…loopy, and not just from our customary alcoholic beverages. Many tangents are had, odd routes followed, and a higher-than-average amount of movie references made, especially for an episode where so much actual news is imparted. Defense of the Ancients 2 will be revealed to the world at Gamescom in Cologne, the Humble Indie Bundle 3 is here, Australia makes serious steps towards an R18+ rating, and everyone decided to be stupid while we were gone, with Blizzard basically sticking a knife into the heart of their fanbase for Diablo 3, Ubisoft returning to always-on DRM for Driver: San Francisco and more, EA getting Dragon Age 2 pulled from Steam with their “me-first-gimmie-gimmie” approach to DLC, and Nintendo almost halves the price of the 3DS in an attempt to get people to buy their newest shiny toy. Please, Share and Enjoy.

It seems like game developers and publishers tend to take a few different strategies with how they release and support their games. This can be for any number of reasons, like meeting a release date, reaching specific sales numbers, and experimenting with sales models. Let’s take a look at what works and what doesn’t.

turkeyfire

Preparations have begun in earnest for the annual family tradition of subjecting poultry to our pathetic attempts to render something resembling the Rockwell-esque family feast ideal. Neighbors have been notified, the proper authorities alerted and the Army is on standby in case we have a repeat of two years ago and need to, as the documentary film Aliens taught us, pull out and nuke the site from orbit (it’s the only way to be sure). This year, our household has decided to add third-degree burns to the roulette wheel of potential disasters by frying our turkey. We hope to produce a juicy and succulent bird for the family, or to at least go out in a flavor-injected twenty-foot fireball.

But you are not here to read about our culinary misadventures; you’re not here to read at all! For the podcast this week, we have some useful consumer advice on this week’s big game sales, the cancellation of the Ender’s Game game, Kinect possibly takes a tentative step towards the future, we finally codify our lambasting of game company executives into a new segment, and I give my thoughts on Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit. Please, enjoy!
