Those who played Mass Effect 2 and were disappointed by Liara’s absence–your prayers have been answered by a DLC. (More info under the cut, including spoilers if you still haven’t picked up the second installment!)

In ME2, the cute cuddly professorial Liara we knew and tolerated (or romanced) was replaced by a darker, embittered, and cruel information broker with a beef with the Shadow Broker. This vendetta of hers begun because she used the Shadow Broker to retrieve Shepherd’s body for Cerberus, thereby ensuring Shepherd’s return. However, she was… disappointed by the Shadow Broker’s behaviour. P.S. Her assistant is a spy.

Many people were annoyed that you couldn’t recruit Liara. However, she’ll now join your team for a special DLC, Lair of the Shadow Broker, in which you team up with Liara to, uh, take down the Shadow Broker, the most powerful information broker in the galaxy.

Does this mean Liara will be added to the somewhat bloated stable of ME2 characters you can play for all missions? I doubt it–currently available screenshots show Shepherd with a group of four companions, one of whom is Liara. If this was a Dossier mission, she’d be one of three (or one of two, with only her and Shepherd on the case).

Oh, and an inconviently placed body

Shepherd's team during an FMV.

Is she being written out of ME3, or is this a way of ensuring her return for ME3? I don’t know, it really could go either way.

The official press-release:

The latest Mass Effect 2 DLC has been revealed, Lair of the Shadow Broker!

Two years ago, Commander Shepard died and Liara T’Soni fought in a desperate struggle against the Shadow Broker to recover her former Commander. Now that Shepard is back, it’s time to even the score.

Team up with Liara and confront the mysterious and sinister Shadow Broker in the latest expansion to Mass Effect 2, coming soon! In the mean time check out three new screenshots and stay tuned for more info on Lair of the Shadow Broker.
